The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint presented by the UN to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. The 17 Goals are all interconnected, and in order to leave no one behind, it is important that we achieve them all by 2030. And this is not option but a necessity if the world is to survive.

Goal 3: Good Health and Well Being

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being for all at all ages is essential to sustainable development.

To achieve good health and wellbeing for everyone:

  • Ensure that healthy practises are adopted

  • Create awareness on the mental health issues, prevention of addiction

  • Make sure everyone has access to quality health care

  • Provide access to sex education and reproductive health

Goal 4: Quality Education

Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development.

Education is the key that will allow many other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved. When people are able to get quality education they can break from the cycle of poverty.

Education helps to reduce inequalities and to reach gender equality. It also empowers people everywhere to live more healthy and sustainable lives. Education is also crucial to fostering tolerance between people and contributes to more peaceful societies.

To achieve quality education for all:

  • End inequalities in educational opportunities based on gender, class, caste, religion or any other factor

  • Improve school facilities to provide a safe and positive environment for everyone

  • Ensure relevant and updated training for teachers

  • Promote education for sustainable development

  • Provide more opportunities for vocational and technical training

Goal 5: Gender Equality - Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

To achieve Gender Equality in schools:

  • Implement policies to promote gender equality

  • End all forms of violence against women and girls

  • Recognise and value women’s work at home

  • To ensure that women and girls have equal opportunities to be heard

  • and participate in all spheres

  • End all practises that might hurt or impair the health and well being of girls and women

Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation for all

Clean, accessible water for all is an essential part of the world we want to live in.

Access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is the most basic human need for health and well-being. Ensuring that everyone has access to sustainable water and sanitation services is a critical climate change mitigation strategy for the years ahead.

To achieve clean water and sanitation for all:

  • Ensure safe water for all

  • Educate everyone on healthy hygiene habits

  • Monitor water quality and encourage water conservation

  • Promote sustainable sewage and waste disposal

  • Create easy access to clean sanitation facilities

Goal 10: Reduce Inequality

To reduce inequalities, policies should be universal in principle, paying attention to the needs of disadvantaged and marginalized populations.
Inequalities based on income, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, class, ethnicity, religion and opportunity continue to persist across the world.  Inequality threatens long-term social and economic development, harms poverty reduction and destroys people’s sense of fulfilment and self-worth. We cannot achieve sustainable development and make the planet better for all if people are excluded from the chance for a better life.

To reduce inequality:

  • Provide support for people who do not have equal access to opportunities

  • Ensure there is no discrimination against any group

  • Create infrastructure to make it more accessible for the differently abled

  • Ensure that provisions are made so everyone can access quality education

  • Create awareness amongst teachers and students on various biases and prejudices

Goal 13: Climate Action

Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone, everywhere.
Climate change is caused by human activities and threatens life on earth as we know it. Every person, in every country in every continent will be impacted in some shape or form by climate change.  If left unchecked, climate change will undo a lot of the development progress made over the past years.

To address climate change:

  • Create awareness about the impact of climate change

  • Introduce initiatives that address climate change

  • Prevent wastage of natural resources

  • Work towards reducing the carbon footprint

  • Promote habits to help conserve energy
